Advocate for your credit union at Texas GAC
Tuesday, February 5, 2019 6:35 AM

The Texas Governmental Affairs Conference will take place Feb. 20-21 in Austin. It comes at the perfect time, when the legislature is getting underway with six new senators and 28 new representatives, and credit unions stand to make a meaningful impact through introductory visits. Direct engagement is what it's all about and precisely why the Texas GAC is the perfect environment for kicking your grassroots efforts into high gear.

Texas GACSome key issues that credit union advocates will want to impress upon these officials concerns the always-vulnerable credit union tax exemption, the continued threats of data breaches, and the lead-up to the sunset review for Texas Credit Union Department (TCUD) in 2021. Changes made during the sunset review could adversely affect credit unions, if decisionmakers were to move credit union oversight to appropriations, where it would compete with banks for budget dollars, verses its current status under TCUD as a self-directed, semi-independent regulator.

"TCUD now has a new commissioner, John Kolhoff, who will speak at the Texas GAC on the morning of Feb. 21," said Cornerstone Chief Government Relations Officer Jim Phelps. "His session presents a significant opportunity for credit union advocates to meet and discuss the sunset review, as well as to familiarize Mr. Kolhoff with your credit union and how it serves your community."
