Abilene Teachers FCU Earns Dora Maxwell Award for ‘March of Dimes’ Initiative

In the spring of 2013, Abilene Teachers FCU was the lead sponsor for Abilene’s March of Dimes (MOD) March for Babies campaign. The credit union became involved with March of Dimes two years ago when CEO James Boyd was asked to serve on the local revenue committee. Through family connections, Boyd is quite attuned to the realities of life in the hospital nursery and the neonatal intensive care unit.

“The March of Dimes truly touches the lives of every family in America,” says Boyd. “We are privileged to partner with them to improve the health of children and to increase the number of babies born full-term.”

For their support of the March of Dimes, the Cornerstone Credit Union League presented the credit union with a first place award in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award, $200-$500 million in assets category.

It was in 2012 that the credit union organized its first fundraising team. With no advance preparation and little knowledge of how the system worked, they set a corporate goal of $20,000. Local MOD staff was surprised by that number, explaining to the credit union that most new teams raise less than $10,000. In just two months, the credit union raised more than $23,000, making the credit union the third largest contributor to the local campaign and the most successful new team.

The credit union’s primary goal was to support the mission of the March of Dimes through fundraising and increased community awareness. Their goal was to raise $75,000 for March of Dimes in 2013, and involve at least 90 percent of staff in one way or another. The credit union reached members through personal interaction, in branch signage, articles in their quarterly newsletter, website and Facebook posts. They also rolled out a new “Pennies for Dimes” debit card, encouraging members to switch to the new design without paying the new card fee.

To get employees engaged, Abilene Teachers FCU held employee meetings and invited March of Dimes representatives to speak. Pizza parties were thrown for teller groups that exceeded their sales goals on raffle tickets. The credit union also designed a T-shirt that would be worn for the walk and on designated days throughout the spring. The T-shirt design featured a large group of employees and their children.

For each debit card transaction made in 2013, Abilene Teachers FCU is donating a penny to March of Dimes. This is a new fundraising method for the March of Dimes – it had never been tried by any of their local chapters.  Additional fundraisers were raffles, casual days, spirit nights at local restaurants, a huge garage sale and a 5K run scheduled for October.  The credit union raised nearly $71,000 through June 30 and is confident they will far exceed their goal of $75,000.
